Not unlucky, just underrated - why we love black cats
It’s no secret that black cats are shrouded by superstition… “If one crosses your path in the street, it’s bad luck”. Unfortunately, those myths and old wive’s tales have stuck around for a long time, meaning that it’s harder for black cats to find their forever homes and receive the love and care they deserve.
But it is time to change that narrative and appreciate the love and charm that black cats bring into our lives…
Why are they feared?
Black cats have historically been associated with witches, dark magic and bad luck. This perception dates back to the Middle Ages, where these beliefs even crossed oceans and invaded other cultures. Black cats were seen as misfortune in a lot of countries.
Did you know that in some cultures, black cats are considered to bring good luck? For example, if a black cat appears at your door in Scotland, it signifies prosperity. In Japan, black cats are a symbol for good fortune.
The sad statistics
In the UK, black cats take 30% longer to be adopted than other cats simply because of the colour of their fur. In 2020, twice as many black cats were taken into rescue centres (1,026) compared to tabby cats (551).

Black cats are no different to any other cat when it comes to personality, playfulness or how much affection they give their humans. They are loyal and loving companions, who deserve as much love and attention as any other pet!
